Relics of the Future is a POV documentary featuring internationally renowned photographer Toni Hafkenscheid as he explores the hidden stories behind iconic architectural images once considered “Visions of the Future” from the 1960's.
Dutch-Canadian photographer Toni Hafkenscheid witnessed the rebirth of his hometown Rotterdam, The Netherlands, after it was flattened during World War II. Urban planners rebuilt a modern city ready for a prosperous future with endless possibilities.
Toni once dreamed of a life inspired by the space race and images he saw watching The Jetsons and Thunderbirds. Flying cars, moving sidewalks and domed urban metropolises dictated how life in the future was supposed to be. But that future never materialized.
Now fifty years later, Toni discovers there are still some remnants of that idealistic era in the shape of iconic architectural buildings and structures. So he packs up his camera and begins a quest across North America and Europe to capture the romanticism of each iconic image with his world-renowned photography called Tilt-Shift. Toni deliberately transforms each structure into a dreamlike or nostalgic state in order to recapture the hope and beauty the buildings once represented when they were first built.
Toni also learns from architectural experts and urban planners about the concepts behind each of these extraordinary buildings. By unearthing the truth behind each image, he discovers what futuristic visions they once entailed and if they ever lived up to the potential they once promised.
Through Toni’s investigative and imaginative lens, Relics of the Future explores innovative Visions of the Future that celebrate memories of Toni’s, and our, collective past.
